The Christmas lightsFour weekends before Christmas in Abergavenny brings about the switching on of the town's Christmas lights.
This is a large and boisterous affair sponsored by the Town Council and the Chamber of Trade that involves an all day road show with music and chat hosted by Sunshine Radio. They provide a stage for the highlight activities that start at around 4pm when the town's Mayor and Santa Claus arrive to switch on the Christmas lights outside the Town Hall in Cross Street, and then lead a torchlight procession through the town.
This event is well attended by enthusiastic local children who light the way round the streets with torches, lanterns and anything that twinkles, to end up in Cibi Walk shopping centre where more lights are switched on and carols are sung around the enormous tree, accompanied by the Salvation Army band.
It’s a great way to get into the spirit of Christmas and to make all that gift-buying even more enjoyable.
